OTAVALO EXPRESS 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT

DAY 1: OTAVALO INDIGENOUS MARKET – CUICOCHA CRATER LAKE

Drive north towards Imbabura, “the lakes” – Province. Enjoy an exciting trip by tasting  exotic fruits in the Guayabamba valley, cross the Equator Line at Cayambe where on a clear day, it is possible to admire its majestic snow-capped mountain (5,790 m.), the world´s highest point where the Equator Line crosses, and try its famous salt biscuits with leaf cheese.

At the foot of Imbabura mountain enjoy the picturesque view of Ecuador’s largest lake-San Pablo. Afterwards, visit the famous Otavalo Indian Market the famous Indian market where vendors proudly offer a stunning variety of weavings – such as the famous ponchos – among other textiles like rugs, mittens and scarves. We compare the market with a rainbow due to the colors of the textiles exhibited. You can also find handcrafts, jewelry and other artisan work.

We make our last stop to visit Cuicocha Crater Lake, it lies at the foot of the extinct volcano Cotocachi (4968m) in the Western Cordillera in the province of Imbabura, north of Quito. That area is home to several mostly dormant volcanoes, like Mojanda, Imbabura and Cayambe. All those volcanoes contributed with their historical eruptions to the fertile valley, one of the most productive agricultural regions in the Andean highland. So not only short term devastation do volcanoes bring but also long term benefits to the environment and nature. Accommodation in a Hacienda in Otavalo 

DAY 2: LIBERTY TRAIN (B)

In the morning after breakfast, our guide will take you to the train station in Ibarra, in order to board the train into the route “Liberty Train” The Journey includes a guided visit to the “salt museum” in the city of Salinas and an artistic performance of an Afro- Ecuadorian ethnical group. The small town of Salinas receives its name due to the salt mines that allocate behind the mountains. After this, our guide will pick you up in Salinas and drive you back to Quito.

COTOPAXI EXPRESS 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT

DAY 1: ANTISANA VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK

Early in the morning we drive southeast of Quito to the Antisana Ecological Reserve, which was one of the places visited by the famous German scientist Alexander von Humboldt who was marveled with the snowy peak of Antisana volcano at 5,740 meters above sea level, the fourth highest in the country. Along the way we will be able to see the lava formations and our guide will explain us about the history and geological development of the area. We will walk through the reserve and around the beautiful Mica lake, where we can watch the moors (páramo) vegetation, and some species of birds such as hummingbirds, pavas, ducks, Andean gull and other migratory species. With luck we may see the Andean condor- largest bird of South American and national symbol of Ecuador. On clear days it usually flies over the area in search of food. We will continue to the Pan American highway; along the way we will be able to admire the Andean landscape and make some short stops so you can take pictures. Our guide will explain more about the region’s history and how it has developed over the centuries, since the arrival of the Spaniards and the formation of large farms. We will arrive at the hotel where we stay and we will be welcomed with a “Canelazo” which is the typical hot drink of the Andes.

DAY 2: COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK AND INDIGENOUS MARKET (B)

Drive along the Pan-American Highway known as “The Volcanoes Avenue” towards one of the world´s highest active volcanoes-Cotopaxi (5,897 m). We will reach the entrance of Cotopaxi National Park and drive on a third class road through a pine forest to Limpiopungo lagoon, a glacial Andean lake located at 3,800 m, along the slopes of the magnificent Cotopaxi volcano. If weather conditions allow, we will drive further to the parking lot located at 4,500 meters in order to hike up to the shelter at 4,800 meters. Afterwards we will visit a typical Indigenous Market in this region. Return to Quito.

BAÑOS EXPRESS 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT

Baños de Agua Santa is located in a valley with waterfalls and hot springs next to the Tungurahua volcano with a height of 5,016 meters, only 180 km from Quito and 35 km from Ambato. The city is surrounded by beautiful rivers including the spectacular Rio Pastaza that serves as the setting for adventure sports.

Baños de Agua Santa, a paradise, is the gateway to the Ecuadorian Amazon, with lush vegetation worthy of admiration of all who visit this beautiful town.

Baños has an altitude of 1,826 meters and has an average temperature of 20°C. The city invites you to relax in thermal pools and spas, adventure for the whole family or extreme sports such as rafting, climbing, canyoning, trekking or jump swing.

Baños has incredible attractions, the principal, the Tungurahua volcano, the majesty of this mountain encouraged mountaineering enthusiasts of all countries to conquer its summit, now the volcano is in eruption process which is reason for visiting many tourists who are attracted by the beautiful spectacle, especially at night.

The hot water pools, is another attraction of the city, and for those who enjoy adventure, a tour of the Falls Road, will enjoy the natural beauty, in which water is the undisputed star. More than 60 are the waterfalls that you can visit, among them including “Pailón del Diablo” or “Manto de la Novia”, which are two of the most visited in the area.

DAY 1: BAÑOS TOWN

Drive along the Pan-American Highway known as “The Volcanoes Avenue”. We will make photo stops and admire the landscape. After three hours’ drive we will arrive in Baños, This small city is located in a valley with waterfalls and hot springs. One of the main attractions is the Tungurahua Volcano and a variety of adventure sports. We will visit famous waterfalls “Manto de la Novia” and “Pailon del Diablo”. Later we will search for a viewpoint to see the Tungurahua active volcano. Overnight in Baños.

 

DAY 2: SALASACA CULTURE (B)

Breakfast. Early in the morning we will visit Salasaca family homes to learn about their daily life. We can see how they make their clothes, the significance of the embroidery in their trousers, shirts and ponchos. We will learn about the traditions of marriage in Salasaca, including all their rites and traditional customs carried out for hundreds of years. We will learn how to make natural dyes using local plants. In the afternoon drive back to Quito.

DEVIL’S NOSE EXPRESS

DAY 1: QUILOTOA CRATER LAKE

Early morning we will drive to Quilotoa Crater Lake located in the province of Cotopaxi, and is part of the ecological Reserve Ilinizas. The beautiful lake in the crater, with its emerald colored water, will take your breath away. During the trip we will enjoy the picturesque landscape, seeing on the way rural indigenous people in their small agricultural communities. This lagoon is not just any lagoon; it’s a lagoon with a legend. A legend about King of volcanoes Quilotoa who used to live on the surface of the lagoon. He faced many battles with his worst enemy, Toachi, who was living beneath the surface of the lagoon. The temperature is warmer inside than outside, it’s a half-hour hike down from the viewpoint (and 1-2 hour hike back up the 280-meter vertical ascent). Continue to Riobamba city where we will make a sightseeing tour. Overnight in Riobamba.

DAY 2: DEVIL’S NOSE TRAIN RIDE (B)

Very early in the morning, after breakfast, we drive to the town of Alausi for a train ride to the famous “Devil’s Nose”. Due to the land topography, this portion is a masterpiece of railway engineering, commonly named ¨ the most difficult railway in the world´. The descent is not an ordinary one, we start the ride at an altitude of 2,346m and go down to 1,860m in just 30 minutes, in a zigzag-carved railway tracks. Back to Quito in the afternoon.
