The evidence points to the canton of Palanda, in the province of Zamora Chinchipe in southern Ecuador, as the oldest known site of cacao domestication in the world. Studies led by archaeologist Francisco Valdez, with the support of Ecuadorian and French research institutions, identified traces of Theobroma cacao cultivation at the Santa Ana-La Florida archaeological site dating back approximately 5,500 years. In April 2025, Ecuador’s National Assembly made this official, formally declaring Palanda as the origin of cacao.

A History That Shapes the Chocolate of Today

That depth of history is part of what makes Ecuadorian chocolate stand out today. In Quito, a growing number of chocolate shops and tasting spaces have built their work around that story. They offer visitors the chance to learn where specific cacao varieties come from, how they are processed, and what distinguishes them from one another.

It is the kind of experience that turns a simple tasting into something more meaningful.

LATAM Airlines launched a new domestic route on March 31, 2026, connecting Cuenca and the Galápagos Islands within the same flight. Passengers benefit from a 37-minute technical stop in Quito, with no change of aircraft, before continuing to Baltra. The return flight operates directly from the islands back to Cuenca. Flights run two days a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

A Route That Links Three World Heritage Sites

This connection brings together three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a single itinerary: Cuenca, Quito, and the Galápagos Islands. For international travelers, it simplifies access to the archipelago for those based in or exploring Ecuador’s southern highlands. Additionally, it opens a more straightforward way to combine two very different sides of the country in one trip.

Why Cuenca Belongs in an Ecuador Itinerary

Cuenca is Ecuador’s third largest city and one of the best-preserved colonial urban centers in South America. It sits at 2,500 meters above sea level in the southern Andes, and is known for its architecture, crafts traditions, and food culture.

Beyond the city, the surrounding region adds further depth to a southern itinerary. Cajas National Park, located approximately 30 minutes from Cuenca, is a high-altitude landscape of lagoons and páramo grasslands. Furthermore, Ingapirca, Ecuador’s most significant Inca archaeological site, is also within easy reach.

The Galápagos as a Natural Extension

The Galápagos Islands are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important wildlife destinations on the planet. Here, travelers can encounter species found nowhere else on Earth, including Giant Tortoises, Marine Iguanas, Blue-footed Boobies, and Galápagos Penguins.

This new route makes it possible to combine both destinations within one trip, flying from Cuenca to the Galápagos on the same aircraft without a separate connection. Moreover, the return journey lands directly in Cuenca, completing a clean circuit through the south.

Flight Schedule

The route operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Below is the full schedule for both operating days:

As the International Day for Biological Diversity approaches this May, it is a good moment to consider what Ecuador genuinely offers to travelers whose primary motivation is nature.

Despite covering less than 0.2% of the planet’s surface, Ecuador is home to roughly 10% of all plant species on Earth. It also holds some of the highest concentrations of birds, reptiles, and mammals per square kilometer anywhere in the world.

This is the result of geography. Four distinct worlds coexist within one compact territory: the Andes, the Amazon, the Pacific coast, and the Galápagos Islands. Each sustains its own ecosystems, and together they form a destination where wildlife travel in Ecuador spans habitats, altitudes, and travel styles.

Four Wildlife Itineraries, Four Landscapes

With this in mind, Geo Boutique has developed four Ecuador wildlife itineraries, each built around a specific landscape and pace.

The first focuses on Ecuador’s high-altitude páramo. Here, Vicuñas, Llamas, Alpacas, wild horses, and a variety of Andean birds roam freely around the slopes of two of the country’s most emblematic volcanoes.

A second itinerary takes travelers through the cloud forests north of Quito. Highlights include hummingbirds, the elusive Spectacled Bear, and the Andean Condor. From there, the route continues into the Amazon basin for a fully immersive lodge experience — with sightings of monkeys, Caimans, Sloths, and Anacondas in primary rainforest.

A third option follows a carefully planned route through private reserves across different elevation zones. It is designed specifically for birding in Ecuador and wildlife specialists. Moreover, this itinerary offers access to over 400 bird species, Andean Condor nesting sites, Mountain Tapirs, Pumas, and nocturnal species observed after dark.

Finally, for those drawn to the Galápagos, an island program combines land visits and snorkeling across multiple islands. Travelers come face to face with Giant Tortoises, Marine Iguanas, Galápagos Penguins, Blue-footed Boobies, Frigate Birds, and sharks in open water.

Experience Built Over 22 Years

Taken together, these itineraries cover the most significant species both on the mainland and across the Galápagos Islands. They offer a comprehensive picture of what Ecuador has to present in terms of nature travel.

Each program reflects Geo Boutique’s 22 years of experience in the destination. Meaningful travel, in this context, requires more than access. It requires the right timing, the right guides, and a program built around what the client genuinely wants to see.

Semana Santa in Ecuador brings a noticeable change to cities and towns across the country. Churches hold daily ceremonies, processions move through historic centers and traditional dishes appear on family tables. In 2026, Holy Week will take place from March 29 to April 5, with Good Friday on April 3. While the dates are the same nationwide, the way the week is expressed differs from one region to another.

Good Friday is the most solemn day of the week within the Christian calendar, commemorating the crucifixion of Christ. In Ecuador, it is also the day when the largest processions are held. In Quito, the “Jesús del Gran Poder” procession moves through the historic center and gathers thousands of participants each year. Many walk dressed in purple robes, locally known as cucuruchos, some carrying wooden crosses as acts of devotion. The route follows key colonial streets and passes through Quito’s historic core, offering a clear and structured setting for those observing the procession.

Cuenca offers a different setting. Its Holy Week program includes Via Crucis reenactments and church ceremonies held throughout the historic center. The scale is more contained than in Quito, yet the schedule of events remains well organized. The compact layout of the city allows visitors to observe the rituals while understanding their religious and historical context.

Regional variations add further depth. In towns such as Chunchi, the “Diablada” incorporates Indigenous symbolism into Holy Week traditions, portraying the tension between good and evil through dance and costume. In parts of the Andes, references to Pachamama coexist with Catholic observance, reflecting how Indigenous belief systems continue to shape religious practice today. These local expressions highlight the cultural diversity present within the same religious framework. Together, these elements create a cultural and religious experience that is distinctive within the region.

Cuisine is also central during this period. Fanesca, prepared with twelve grains and salted cod, is traditionally consumed only during Holy Week. The ingredients carry symbolic meaning linked to the apostles and to seasonal agricultural cycles.

Alongside fanesca, other traditional preparations appear on family tables during this period. In many homes, dishes based on potatoes are also common, including moro, a mashed potato preparation typically served with fresh cheese or lettuce, with slight variations depending on family traditions. Sweet desserts are also part of the meal that follows the main dish, such as rice pudding, honey-coated buñuelos or figs served with local cheese. Together, these foods reflect the seasonal character of the week and the way culinary traditions accompany religious celebrations across Ecuador.

Participating allowed us to contribute directly to an urban reforestation effort and support the strengthening of green spaces in the city. For those who would like to see the area where the trees were planted, you can explore it here on Google Earth. As a company based in Ecuador, we believe it is important to take part in initiatives that support the long-term wellbeing of the destinations where we operate.

This same approach guides our collaboration with Indigenous communities, family-owned lodges, conservation initiatives and local producers throughout mainland Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands. These partnerships are structured to ensure tourism generates direct economic impact in destination while supporting environmental protection and local development. At the same time, we maintain the service standards and operational consistency expected across all travel segments.

With this framework in place, we developed a dedicated itinerary centred on sustainability, climate awareness and real-world environmental challenges. The journey includes visits to recycling and waste management initiatives in Quito, community-based cacao projects in the Amazon, discussions around the impact of unregulated mining, circular economy practices in Cuenca, renewable energy solutions in the Galápagos and landscape recovery initiatives in Santa Cruz. These visits are designed to provide insight into how environmental issues are addressed locally and how tourism can be connected to these efforts in a structured way.

The program was developed by the Geo team, who have extensive experience in integrating sustainability and environmental awareness into product design. Their ongoing collaboration with environmental and community initiatives allows us to translate these themes into well-structured travel experiences, supported by solid planning and operational consistency.

If you are interested in learning more about this initiative or exploring how sustainability is incorporated into our Ecuador portfolio, please contact fernanda@georeisen-ecuador.com. In 2026, Carnival takes place on Monday and Tuesday, February 16 and 17, just before the start of Lent.

During these days, routines change, schools and offices adjust their schedules, and public spaces adopt a different rhythm that shapes everyday life in cities and towns.

One of the defining characteristics of Carnival in Ecuador is that it is lived differently from one region to another. There is no single format or central celebration.

In cities such as Guaranda, Carnival is closely linked to street life, with music, water games, and spontaneous interactions rooted in long standing local customs. In Ambato, the season coincides with the Flower and Fruit Festival, a civic celebration focused on agriculture, local production, and public parades.

Carnival is also present in Ecuador’s urban centers in a different way. In Quito, celebrations are spread across neighborhoods and public spaces, where water and foam games are common and participation is informal. Streets, parks, and plazas become natural meeting points.

In the Amazon region, Carnival takes on yet another character. In towns such as Puyo, celebrations often focus on cultural and community activities, including music, dance, and gatherings held in shared public spaces near rivers and forests.

For international travelers, this variety helps explain why Carnival in Ecuador feels different from large scale celebrations elsewhere in South America. While some destinations organize structured events, many celebrations remain closely connected to local life.

This period also overlaps with Pawkar Raymi, an Andean celebration linked to flowering and harvest cycles in indigenous communities. The coexistence of both traditions reflects how different cultural roots live side by side in Ecuador.

The examples mentioned here are only references. Across the country, Carnival is expressed in many ways, shaped by local customs and regional identity.

Every December, Ecuador’s capital transforms into a vibrant city of celebration. Quito, one of Latin America’s most charming destinations, commemorates its foundation on December 6th, marking 491 years of history. What began as a local festivity has become one of the country’s most joyful traditions — a time when locals and visitors share music, heritage, and the warm spirit that defines Quiteños.

During this week, the streets come alive with color and sound. Pasacalles (traditional parades) fill the Historic Center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the city’s iconic chivas — colorful party buses with live bands — move through neighborhoods, filling the air with rhythm and celebration. The aroma of empanadas de viento and canelazo (a warm drink made from naranjilla juice, cinnamon, sugar, and aguardiente) invites everyone to raise a toast to the city.

For Quiteños, these days are about more than festivities. Families and friends gather to play Cuarenta, the traditional card game that brings laughter, rivalry, and connection to every celebration. From balconies to plazas, music and joy echo across the city — reminders of why Quito’s people are known for their hospitality and passion.

During this festive time, Quito’s essence truly shines. A city that blends tradition, culture, and heritage with its warm local character. Its colonial heart — one of the most beautiful in South America — becomes the perfect stage to celebrate identity, while its cobblestone streets and historic churches create a magical backdrop for days filled with life and meaning.

At Geo Boutique Travel Designer, we invite you to experience Quito not only during its anniversary, but any time of the year.

Ask us about our Quito Daily Tours or our tailor-made itineraries that include Ecuador’s capital. Discover its stories, flavors, and perspectives — all brought to life by our expert local guides.

Join Geo Boutique on this festive journey through the heart of Ecuador. Feel the rhythm, taste the tradition, and celebrate Quito like a local.
