21 May Ecuador and the origins of Cacao

On July 7th, World Chocolate Day is celebrated globally. Few countries have more to say on the subject than Ecuador.

The evidence points to the canton of Palanda, in the province of Zamora Chinchipe in southern Ecuador, as the oldest known site of cacao domestication in the world. Studies led by archaeologist Francisco Valdez, with the support of Ecuadorian and French research institutions, identified traces of Theobroma cacao cultivation at the Santa Ana-La Florida archaeological site dating back approximately 5,500 years. In April 2025, Ecuador’s National Assembly made this official, formally declaring Palanda as the origin of cacao.

A History That Shapes the Chocolate of Today

That depth of history is part of what makes Ecuadorian chocolate stand out today. In Quito, a growing number of chocolate shops and tasting spaces have built their work around that story. They offer visitors the chance to learn where specific cacao varieties come from, how they are processed, and what distinguishes them from one another.
